OP ED: A space port in Vermillion Parish

Mais, iz dat a nutria rat on the launch pad?

If you told anyone down in Vermilion Parish a few years ago that Pecan Island's future involved giant rockets instead of duck blinds and coastal erosion, they'd call you couyon. But now SpaceX is pitching this insane $100 BILLION "Starbase, Louisiana" mega-project across 125,000 acres of marshland.

Honestly, it’s a double-edged sword for us. On one hand, bringing 3,000 jobs averaging $93k could finally stop our young people from fleeing to Texas or Florida the second they graduate. We might actually get our roads fixed and bring real investment into local tech programs.

But you can't just slap the world's largest launchpad onto a fragile coastal buffer without consequences. We've seen the debris and noise issues at the Boca Chica, Texas launch area, and 30 launches a day would wreck daily life for local fishermen. Not to mention thousands of out-of-state workers flowing in, jacking up local rent and clogging up quiet two-lane roads. I think SpaceX need to build a nice, straight 6 lane highway to the lock at the abandoned  Freshwater City first.

Elon Musk and state politicians will push their plan, and it is most likely to be a historical change in the direction of southern Louisiana. But if local leadership doesn't dig their heels in to protect our wetlands and culture, Pecan Island will be Pee-gone Island.

I want to see it, and I want to see our Cajun way of life thrive in this new environment.
